Why most eye creams are not formulated for the eye itself optometrist explains

Why Most Eye Creams Aren't Actually Formulated for the Eye

Here is something most people don't think about: the eye cream you apply every night was almost certainly designed for the skin around your eye, not the eye itself. That might sound like a subtle distinction, but it matters. The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your body, and anything you apply near your lash line or the corner of your eye can migrate onto the eye surface. If that product contains preservatives, fragrance, alcohol, or other common skincare ingredients, it can sensitise the delicate surface of the eye over time.

This is not a theoretical concern. The TFOS DEWS II study, one of the most comprehensive pieces of research into dry eye disease, identified a list of known eye irritants that are found in the vast majority of everyday eye care and skincare products. These include preservatives, alcohol, fragrance, fillers, wax, emulsifiers, and tea tree oil. Most eye creams on the market contain at least one of these.

At Peep Club, we think about the eye itself, not just the skin around it. Our products are developed by optometrists and formulated to be free from all known eye irritants identified by the TFOS DEWS II study. It is a harder way to make products, but it is the right way.

“The first step in innovation, which turned out to be extremely challenging, was experimenting how to safely make products without known eye irritants. It's not just preservatives, it's things like talcum powder, alcohol, fragrance and wax.”  — Nicola Alexander, Optometrist and Peep Club Co-Founder, Optician Online

The Problem With Most Eye Creams

Walk into any beauty retailer and the eye cream section is full of promises: depuff, brighten, smooth, hydrate. What you will not find on the label is any mention of whether the formula is safe for the surface of the eye. That is because most eye creams are classified as skincare, and skincare is formulated for skin. The eye itself is simply not part of the equation.

The problem is that your eyes do not exist in isolation from the skin around them. Product applied to the eyelid or under-eye area migrates. It gets into the tear film. It sits on the lash line. Over time, the ingredients in that product interact with one of the most sensitive surfaces in your body. Preservatives can damage corneal cells. Fragrance can trigger inflammation. Wax can clog the tiny meibomian glands that produce the oil layer of your tears.

“Women who have been lining their waterline for years, and then applying mascara and powder eyeshadow, can really have clogged those glands.”  — Nicola Alexander, Optometrist and Peep Club Co-Founder, Daily Mail

And it is not just makeup. The same article explains that everyday makeup removers can be just as problematic.

“Makeup removers can also be full of nasty things, whether that's preservatives, or waxes that cause further buildup.”  — Nicola Alexander, Optometrist and Peep Club Co-Founder, Daily Mail

The result is a cycle that many people do not even realise they are in. They use an eye cream or remover that contains irritants. Their eyes become drier, more red, more uncomfortable. They respond by using more product. And the cycle continues.

What the Research Says: The TFOS DEWS II Irritants List

The TFOS DEWS II study (Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society, Dry Eye Workshop II) is the gold standard in dry eye research. It identified a specific list of ingredient categories that are known to irritate the eye surface. These are not obscure chemicals. They are common, everyday ingredients found in products that millions of people apply near their eyes every day.

Known eye irritants per TFOS DEWS II:

  • Preservatives (including parabens, phenoxyethanol, benzalkonium chloride)
  • Alcohol (denatured alcohol, ethanol, SD alcohol)
  • Fragrance (parfum, natural or synthetic)
  •  Fillers (mineral oil, petrolatum, talcum powder)
  • Wax (beeswax, candelilla, carnauba)
  • Emulsifiers (polysorbate 80, cetearyl alcohol, PEG compounds)
  • Tea tree oil (despite being marketed as natural and gentle)

Check the ingredients list on your eye cream. If it contains any of the above, it was not formulated with the eye itself in mind. Peep Club is the first and only brand to be free from all known eye irritants identified by the TFOS DEWS II study.

The Real Impact: More Than Just Discomfort

Dry, irritated eyes are not just uncomfortable. For many people, they affect confidence, daily routines, and quality of life. Research by Peep Club found that 80% of people now experience dry eye symptoms, even though only 33% have been diagnosed.

“Now, dry eye affects millions of younger women and men as a result of increased screen-use. Our research revealed that 80% of people now experience dry eye symptoms even though only 33% have been diagnosed.”  — Nicola Alexander, Optometrist and Peep Club Co-Founder, Optician Online

And for many women, hormonal changes make the problem worse over time.

“More than 50 per cent of women over 40 suffer with dry eyes, because hormonal changes cause lower tear volume and poor tear quality.”  — Nicola Alexander, Optometrist and Peep Club Co-Founder, Hello Magazine

Nicola has seen firsthand how much this affects people's lives.

“We receive the most heart-wrenching customer emails. People who tell us they can't wear makeup to their daughter's wedding because their eyes are streaming so much. People whose dry eye symptoms mean they receive comments on the street or at work asking if they are crying.”  — Nicola Alexander, Optometrist and Peep Club Co-Founder, Beauty Independent

When the products you use near your eyes are contributing to the problem rather than helping, it matters. Switching to products formulated for the eye itself, not just the skin around it, is one of the simplest changes you can make.

What to Look For Instead

If you want products that are genuinely safe for the eye area, the answer is simpler than you might think.

“When it comes to eyes, the simpler the better. Look for ingredients like grapeseed oil, almond oil, coconut oil as the base.”  — Nicola Alexander, Optometrist and Peep Club Co-Founder, Who What Wear

Here is what to check for when choosing any product that goes near your eyes:

  • Is it preservative-free? Preservatives are the most common eye irritant. A preservative-free formula requires more sophisticated manufacturing, but it is significantly better for the eye surface.
  • Is it fragrance-free? Fragrance, even natural fragrance, can trigger inflammation on the eye surface.
  • Does it avoid wax and fillers? Wax can clog meibomian glands. Fillers like mineral oil sit on the skin without providing benefit and can interfere with tear film function.
  • Was it developed by eye care professionals? There is a difference between a skincare brand adding 'for the eye area' to the label and a product developed from the ground up by optometrists.
  • Does it care for the eye itself, or just the skin? The best eye area products support tear film health, eyelid hygiene, and the delicate skin around the eyes, all at once.

    What Beauty Editors Are Saying

The shift toward eye-safe formulation is being noticed across the beauty industry. Here is what beauty editors and experts are saying:

“I love my original Peep Club heated eye wand so much I have two; their soothing warmth and microvibrations are a balm for burning, dry eyes. Used daily, this tiny wand can actually help reduce irritation and rosacea in the eye area.”  — Ingeborg van Lotringen, Beauty Director, SheerLuxe

“London-based optometrist-led brand Peep Club, who create brilliant products for dry eyes, promise that they biodegrade and are made from trees that are part of a regenerative programme. They're ultra gentle yet get the job done in a flash.”  — Beauty Editor, Get The Gloss

“The Peep Club heated eye wand is a nifty little gadget that was designed in collaboration with optometrists, primarily as a hot compress to help with dry, tired eyes.”  — Beauty Editor, The Guardian

Celebrity makeup artist Ash K Holm, whose clients include Khloe Kardashian and Ariana Grande, has also adopted a Peep Club routine for prepping the eye area before makeup.

“Start with a dedicated eye cleanser rather than face wash, as the eye area is too sensitive for regular cleansers. End the day with a heated eye wand to loosen clogs in the oil glands along the eyelid.”  — Ash K Holm, Celebrity Makeup Artist, Who What Wear

The Peep Club Approach: Formulated for the Eye Itself

Peep Club was founded by optometrist Nicola Alexander with one principle: eye care products should be safe for the eye, not just the skin around it. Every Peep Club product is free from all known eye irritants identified by the TFOS DEWS II study. They are made in Peep Club's own UK laboratory using a patented, preservative-free manufacturing process.

Formulating without preservatives is a significant technical achievement. Preservatives play an important role in protecting products from bacteria, mold, and yeast. But they are harmful to the eye surface. Instead of using preservatives, Peep Club uses a patented manufacturing process and fresh-batch production to maintain the highest safety standards without compromising eye health.

The result is a range of products that cares for the whole eye area: the surface of the eye, the eyelids, the lashes, and the delicate skin around the eyes. Here are five products that show the difference between formulating for the skin and formulating for the eye itself:
